Botanical Medicine
Many plants have compounds that can assist the body’s healing. In fact, mainstream pharmaceuticals are often based on these compounds and many have been created in an attempt to mimic the actions of medicinal plants (for instance, Metformin, which is used to lower blood sugar and control diabetes, is from Syringa spp., and Digoxin, which is used to treat heart disease, is from Digital spp.). NDs are trained in the safe and effective use of herbs and may prescribe them in the form of liquid extracts, capsules, teas, salves, and more. We generally prefer their use over pharmaceuticals due to their relatively gentle/safe profiles and unique ability to be combined into synergistic formulas as unique as the individual for which they are crafted.
