Naturopathic medicine is individualized medicine built on the foundation of scientific research and clinical experience. It employs the least intrusive treatment required by the body and mind to promote healing and optimal wellness. To that end, Naturopathic Doctors (aka: NDs or Naturopaths) choose from many tools to optimize your health. A small sampling of the most common naturopathic “modalities” are listed below with links if you click on the text.

Lifestyle Coaching

It goes without saying that food is vitally important to life and that most of us are deeply and emotionally defined by what and how we eat. NDs are well versed in nutrition and believe, as Hippocrates did, that you should “Let the food be thy medicine and the medicine be thy food.” Not surprisingly, a large body of research confirms that food can heal as well as harm. It is our goal to help you make personal and practical decisions about what you eat. We know these changes affect most aspects of your life and potentially the lives of your family, so we don’t suggest them lightheartedly. We may use any combination of personal/family history, diet analysis, blood tests, and physical exams to collaborate with you in building the most appropriate diet for you to prevent/heal disease and optimize your future health.

Botanical Medicine

Many plants have compounds that can assist the body’s healing. In fact, mainstream pharmaceuticals are often based on these compounds and many have been created in an attempt to mimic the actions of medicinal plants (for instance, Metformin, which is used to lower blood sugar and control diabetes, is from Syringa spp., and Digoxin, which is used to treat heart disease, is from Digital spp.). NDs are trained in the safe and effective use of herbs and may prescribe them in the form of liquid extracts, capsules, teas, salves, and more. We generally prefer their use over pharmaceuticals due to their relatively gentle/safe profiles and unique ability to be combined into synergistic formulas as unique as the individual for which they are crafted.

Hydrotherapy is the use of water, in all of its forms, to treat pain, inflammation, toxicity, and disease. NDs are trained to use water to boost the immune system, promote the healing of physical traumas, reduce pain, and more.

Homeopathy is a tool used by NDs to stimulate the body’s instinctive ability to heal. A homeopathic “remedy” contains minute amounts of plant, mineral or animal substances that assist the body in healing and strengthening. They can be used in all varieties of chronic and acute conditions such as anxiety, arthritis, sleep disorders, depression, digestive complaints, acute injuries, colds, and flus, just to name a few.

As NDs, we treat the whole person including their emotional and mental health. We consider counseling a core treatment modality and use it as a tool to support a sound body, mind, and spirit.

Functional Lab Testing

See page with functional lab testing information.

Biofeedback is a tool used by NDs to help patients avoid the long-term harm stress can cause the body. It can also be used to manage pain, lower blood pressure, and reduce anxiety. It works by educating you of your voluntary and involuntary physiological response to stressors through observation and special programs. The most common responses to stress are changes in breath rate, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and muscle tension. When you are aware, you can stop the responses before they spiral out of control. This will increase your physical and emotional health and the well-being of those affected by you.
